What Are the Famous Festivals in Thailand?

Songkran Festival in mid AprilIn Thailand, as also in the Dai People communities of Southern China [ where the Tai originated from ], the Tai Lao in Laos,and the Buddhist communities in Cambodia and Myanmar, the Calender New Year is occassioned between 13 and 15 April each year. The Thai use a lunisolar calendar [ both the Sun rotation and the moon phase rotation ] and the date was fixed on a solar calculation. The word '' Songkran '' is derived from the Indian sancript word '' Sankanta '' which means '' a change or move ''. The dates are now fixed arbitarily but originally would move with the move of the sun on the vernal equinox. This occured as a consequence of '' precession '' and the tilt of the earth and the effect of its orbit. Over the past the dates have changed but are now fixed irrespective of the original rationale and what would otherwise be the astrological calculation. From a natural perspective the dates also signal the end of the dry season.Loy Krathong FestivalLoy Krathong Festival is celebrated in all of Thailand in November. Loy Krathong celebrates the end of the rainy season which is also the full moon of the 12 th month of the Thai Lunar Calendar. Loy or Loi means to float and Krathong or Kratong means a raft the sive of ones open hand. The point of the festival is to prepare and then float at full moon down a stream, river or other water water, an elaborately prepared offering on the raft to be released and float away by water to release with it as a symbolic gester, ones bad feelings, anger, stress and grievances.The festival has its beginnings in the Indianisation process of South East Asia and an original Brahmanical festival from Northern India. Many Thais also accept natural forces as spirits or '' gods '' and the floating of the Krathong is symbolic gesture to the Goddess of water, Phra Mae Khongkha. The Thais proclaim the festival originated in Thailand at Sukhothai at the time of the Sukhothai Kingdom, but here then also Indian and Brahmanical influences with powerful.Bai SriThe Bai Sri is a blessing ceremony performed to bestow happiness and prosperity to a person or place. The ceremony features a beautifully-shaped ornament called a khrueng bai sri ton, made of elaborately-folded banana leaves. A container is beautifully decorated with fresh flowers and banana leaves, It is often used during auspicious ceremonies. The popular forms of the Bai Sri offerings are the Bai Sri Pak Cham and Bai Sri Yai.Bai Sri Pak Cham is small and looks like a bowl. A section of banana trunk can be used to make this form of Bai Sri, which is often used in a ceremony to worship deities and in a ceremony to pay homage to teachers. Bai Sri Yai is generally used in significant events, such as a royal ceremony to strengthen the royal Khwan. According to ancient traditions, a nine-tier Bai Sri is for the King and the Queen, a seven-tier Bai Sri is for a prince or a princess, a five-tier Bai Sri is for the royal guest with the status of a president, a three-tier Bai Sri is for a minister or for use in the wedding of a royal grandchild.Bai Sri rituals are often performed in Chiang Mai. Thai people preserve this rite as a legacy for future generations. I learned on one of the news channels that there were problems ahead created by HD television for television performers with warts, moles, or other skin blemishes. Demi Moore was mentioned. I suppose that meant that if they show a Demi Moore movie with HD television she might show a blemish sending her zillion fans a running.Demi has spent some time here in Idaho (having investments here and a failed marriage). From what I hear first hand, she is absolutely stunning even under close scrutiny when she dances in that joint up in Sun Valley. Do you really think her fans will care?The shop owners in Ketchum can hardly wait for her to come into their stores to buy a button (which she collects), or a claw hammer. The men merchants are all in love with her. I donвЂ™t think she has any HD problems. One said to me, "She's my little sweatheart." He said it like he believed it and that it was true. (That can't be true. Demi wouldn't do that to me, would she? I wish she'd stay away from that kid!)Whoever thinks that Hollywood canвЂ™t hide a Demi Moore blemish thinks that Kangaroos thrive in the mountains of Greenland.A television ad flashes a toad on my old television screen. First, the toad had no color. Then they show me what it would be like if I just had a HD television set. It is gorgeous; just full of color. I ask my wife, вЂњIf that toad appears like that on my old television, why do I need HD television?вЂќвЂњYou donвЂ™t!вЂќ is what she said.I explained to my wife that it would make a difference if we had a 50-inch television set. I told her they had a nice one on sale down at CostcoВ®.She said, "Just pull your chair up closer. Same difference!"How do you argue with such logic?My dad use to say when television came out, вЂњIвЂ™m going to wait until they get it perfected.вЂќ We had no television at out house. "The conflicting muscular responses that occur, between the two vocal registers, when attempting to produce pure, superior vocal tone, represent the natural responses to the energy of the motor force (breath tension) being applied to the muscles of both registers." (p. 16).For an individual to advance from routine singing to a professional, there are years of muscular control development through exercises, practice, and by listening and studying those professionals already proficient in opera. The interior of the pub has remained relatively unchanged and therefore you get a good idea of how Brendan Beehan may have felt sitting there enjoying a drink while thinking up more great works of art.A few minutes walk from Grafton Street, on South Great George Street, and housed in a magnificent listed building is the Long Hall Pub. This is a very popular local pub and one of Dublin's oldest watering houses. It's traditionally decorated and will give you a good feel for what pubs were like in Ireland many years ago. It's renowned for having a warm and welcoming atmosphere and all who visit are made to feel like part of the furniture.Ten minutes walk from Grafton Street, on Baggot Street, is the old style traditional pub Toners. It's well known as supposedly being the only pub the famous Irish poet, WB Yeats frequented. Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923 and was also one of the founding members of the Abbey Theatre. Two of his well-known poems are 'The Wanderings of Oisin' and 'The Second Coming'. Yeats was said to have enjoyed the odd sherry in Toners, perhaps pondering on his unrequited love by Maud Gonne! Toners has an old rustic feel to it with original stock drawers still behind the counter and a traditional stone floor. Patrick Kavanagh was also a regular visitor to Toners. Kavanagh was a famous Irish poet and novelist; two of his most popular productions were 'The Great Hunger' and 'Raglan Road'.To have a reputation as having great literary significance in Dublin, beautifully sums up The Palace Bar. Situated on Fleet Street, a short walk from Grafton Street and Temple Bar. This is a traditional bar with a difference. It's Pre-Victorian and therefore has a different feel to many of the other Dublin pubs. The Palace Bar is an old pub dating back to the early 19th century. It is steeped in literary history and is famously known for being home in the 1940's to 'The Fourth Estate' (educated people whose interest is in literature). This get together of the 'who's who' of Dublin literary society was held in the back room of the pub with its spectacular stained glass, and still to this day it has retained a strong historical feel. The Palace was a favourite spot for Patrick Kavanagh, Brendan Beehan and Flann O Brien. It remains a popular hang out for journalists probably hoping for some inspiration so as to embark on their first Booker Prize winning novel. It has a reputation as being one of Dublin's favourite pubs and has remained untouched and untainted by the modern era.Mulligans Pub situated on Poolbeg Street, just off Burgh Quay, is a pub that has refused to change with the times. Its interior is dated but its atmosphere is alive and kicking. It was mentioned in Ulysses but perhaps what it is better known for is its numerous famous visitors over the years. Although they may not be considered literary geniuses they would have been many literary pieces done in their honour! JF Kennedy frequented the pub in the 1940's when he worked for the Hearst Newspaper Chain. Other visitors included Judy Garland, Maureen O Hara, Cecil Sheridan and Eamon Andrews who were but a few of Mulligans clientele.'The Society for the Preservation of the Dublin Accent' used to hold their meetings here and you can see a plaque in commemoration to them on the wall.Other pubs with literary connections to look out for on your wanderings through this area are The Brazen Head, on Bridge Street and Grogans situated on South William Street.A word of warning; if embarking on this literary tour of Dublin pubs, it might be an idea to do it over a couple of days or abstain from the black stuff in some of the establishments. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - Intriguing Dream Images

The first three installments of the Harry Potter series have shown us flashbacks, hallucinations, magic mirrors, time travel, and other altered states of consciousness as Harry drifts in and out of reality. Haunted by ghosts of his past, a demonic wizard hell-bent on destroying him, and soul-sucking dementors who want to tap into his misery, Harry's state of mind is a constant concern for his friends and adopted family at Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," however, for the first time we are invited into Harry's tortured dreams as he enters his fourth year at the school.

Director Mike Newell includes three dream sequences taken from the book by J.K. Rowling. Although all the dreams take place in the same location with the same characters and have the same theme (i.e., let's kill Harry Potter), their presentations differ greatly and therefore produce different emotions in the viewer.

The first dream sequence begins the movie. We see an old caretaker notice a light in an abandoned house that he's watching. He angrily marches over to the house expecting to find some unruly teenagers. Instead he finds Lord Voldemort, Wormtail, and another mysterious man talking about the ultimate demise of Harry. A huge snake slithers by the caretaker as he listens outside the door. Suddenly his presence becomes known and as the caretaker is attacked, Harry awakens in a terrified state from the dream.

Unlike dream sequences that use black and white or distorted color, garbled sound, and illogical images to indicate an altered state of consciousness or specifically a dream, this first dream sequence has no visual or aural cues. The dream occurs in real-time; we feel what Harry feels and we assume that it's really happening. Until we see Harry awaken, we believe (and are supposed to believe) that the scene is actually taking place. This director's trick (and in this case also the author's trick) hooks us immediately into the action, and then shocks us by revealing that it was all just a dream.

The second dream sequence happens in real-time also. We know it's a dream, however, because we see Harry sleeping fitfully in bed before it starts. Throughout the sequence, we see scenes of Harry sleeping. The dream is similar to before, but we learn a little more this time. Because it's not a surprise, this dream looks like a typical movie dream with slow motion, blurring, and an unreal quality. Harry awakens in a frightened sweat again. We don't feel quite as threatened this time because we're led to believe that Harry suffers from recurring nightmares (and with his troubled past who could blame him?)

The third time we see Harry's dream is through a flashback as he recalls the dream out loud in Albus Dumbledore's office. We're still confused about the relevance of these dreams. Because the dream is not happening in real-time, but is a brief flashback - a mere memory of what Harry thought he dreamed, the dream's importance may be lessened. After recounting the dream, he asks Dumbledore if the dreams could possibly be something other than random and meaningless. Could they be telepathic scenes currently taking place or possibly prophetic dreams that predict Harry's future? The final thirty minutes of the film answer this question.

The reason why filmmakers (and authors) use dream sequences is to increase audience involvement and connectedness to the character. Getting inside of Harry's head allows us to feel his horror and share his sense of dread.

By keeping us off-guard as to whether or not these dreams are true events, real-time dreams, or memories of dreams, the director confuses us as to what is real and what is an illusion. It's cinematic sorcery that bewitches us into reading the book, going to the multiplex, and buying the DVD.

Negative word-of-mouth advertising is far worse than none at all. Try to teach your people the fine art of taking care of the consumer and do everything in your power to keep them. What have you got to lose? Just profits and success, if you fail to follow this advice.

How to Sell Like a Telephone Superstar to Difficult Customers

When it comes to phone sales, difficult customers are part of life. Sometimes they can be turned around, sometimes they cannot. But, there is a higher probability of selling to them if you can relate to them, and figure out where they're coming from, without being intimidated or frustrated. Here are some ways I try to dispel their venom, all the while building grounds for a sale.

Keep an even tone to your voice and show no negative emotion. Be calm, and have an easy manner. By doing this, you are maintaining control of the call. If the customer rants, stop talking and let them spew their anger. When they're done, acknowledge what they have said, and then continue on with the negotiation or sales presentation. Show respect but also expect it back from the customer, without rudeness. This means being firm, authoritive yet friendly, and sticking to the point of the call. Give the customer reason to trust you. The voice is your most powerful weapon. How you use it is important. A low and steady tone is what works best for me. Find what is best for your individual needs and build upon it.

Remember, if the caller is mad, most likely they are unhappy with the company's promotion or policies, not at you personally. Talking with salespeople on the phones can bring out the worst behavior in some people. Angry or hostile people may want you to feel as lousy as they do, so don't give them the satisfaction. Answer their questions, did they misunderstand the promotion? Have solutions for their problems, the best you can. Try breaking the tension with a light joke or statement (weather, etc). Don't be their enemy or egg them on, be their concerned "friend" (in a firm way). By being the bigger person, and keeping cool, you show the customer that you deserve respect. It's all about positivity and psychology. Customers can get on all of our nerves from time to time. What I do is stop, get coffee or walk around and get my center back before going on to the next call. Never poison the next call with negativity, it must be diffused as quickly as possible in order to keep good sales stats.

When your position requires asking for customers' credit card information, they can be very touchy. Giving out a credit card number to a total stranger is something that is scary for most people. We've all heard horror stories of scams, and it's our job to build the customer's trust in order to get the sale. If the customer is getting uptight or unpleasant, let them know positive aspects about your company. For example, if your company is registered with the Better Business Bureau, let them know. Tell them how long you've been in business, give references if warranted. Show them that you are legit, and that your company isn't going anywhere. Be real and totally ethical. If the customer does give you the credit card number, don't repeat the number back at them. Nothing strikes fear in my heart more than hearing a phone agent repeat my private information back to me. I don't know who else is right there with them, so with my own customers, I don't give them any reasons to doubt me. The doubt is already there, the goal is to lessen it.

When dealing with an obnoxious customer, who doesn't want to buy whatever you're selling, joke with them, but not at them. Don't defend yourself, don't insult them, just have a laid back persistence, as you continue to try and sell to them. They eventually get tired of trying to get a rise out of you and hang up. Some of them may even listen and eventually buy. Be patient and try to draw them out by relating, even if they are acting repulsive. Just make sure to maintain professionality. It's all about the money, and not personal. If they make insults at you, consider the source. It doesn't matter to me what some mean-spirited person thinks. I just thank my lucky stars I don't have to live with them, and wonder how they live with themselves on a daily basis. By laughing (silently, to yourself) at the situation, you stay in control of the call.

Do everything by the book. Cross your t's and dot your i's. Because some opportunistic types might be looking for a mess-up so that they can complain about it, and possibly get a discount. Be professional and give them top quality, detailed service. Be kind, quick to answer and alert to any questions thrown your way. Be the best salesperson you can be. Customers may not really have it out for you, but sometimes what they say can hurt. By being respectable, ethical and consistent, you will keep your respect and self-esteem during even the meanest attacks.

It goes without saying, know everything you can about your product. If you work from your home office, like I do, then support may not be immediately available, so it pays to be as prepared as possible for answering questions of every kind from customers who persistently ask a hundred questions. By being inquisitive in your product, it shows interest, so don't write off the customer as being difficult. Answer each and every question. If you don't know the answer, go find it and get back to them with it. If they apologize for asking so many questions later (many of mine do), just tell them it's your pleasure to help them. And silently to yourself, feel good about the situation, that you turned them around and made the sale.

By being patient and calm, firm yet friendly, your sales can go through the roof. My sales conversions are usually nearly double what others doing my job are, because I am persistent and firm. If the caller is lonely, I chat a little with them. If they're in a hurry, I pick up my sales pace a little while maintaining my voice quality. Make sure to be thorough, and don't sound like you're reading anything. Conversational is the key. By relating to your callers, you'll see your checks and your confidence grow. Don't give up and remember, once the call is over, most likely, you'll never see that person again. So, don't sweat it. Maintain positivity and refine your selling to tough customers. In time it will get easier, on the times that are hard, remember that it's only temporary. The sun comes out again tomorrow..the next call could be a sale. Some will, some won't..who cares? Who's next?! Never take your eyes of the goal, a bigger paycheck.

The first problem is programming the VCR or DVR. I seem to get it wrong about half the time. Either I select the wrong channel or the wrong time or the clock is incorrectly set or I forget to press the timer button. I'm sure that you are better at it than I am and advances in technology have tried to make it easier for us but there is still that insecure feeling that I might not record what I wanted to record.

Time-shift viewing is great for recording soaps and films to watch when you get home but it isn't much good when you want to watch a live event like a football game. At least half the excitement is watching the game as it is played.

Do you get time to watch everything that you've recorded? What if instead of time-shifting your satellite TV you place-shifted it instead. What do I mean? Well what if you could take your home theatre or satellite TV with you wherever you went. It sounds too good to be true doesn't it. But that's exactly what people are starting to do.

You put a new box on top of your stack of AV equipment, connect it to your home theatre and your home network broadband connection and have all the things you want to watch beamed to your notebook PC, PDA or smartphone wherever you are.

How does place-shift viewing work?

Take the audio and video (AV) output from your home theatre and connect it to a piece of hardware that digitises it and beams it to the Internet. Wherever you are in the world, providing that you can make a broadband connection to the Internet, you can now watch the TV that is being streamed from your home system in real time. You really can now watch that NFL game online that you thought you were going to miss.
The system isn't just one-way either. You are able to use the new equipment to control youвЂ™re the devices in your home allowing you to change channel or rewind the DVR etc remotely. This means that you can watch what your DVR has recorded as well as watching live TV.
